My Love of Drumming
I started drumming during the pandemic. And honestly, I still regret not starting much sooner. Drumming is about much more than playing a rhythm for me. You use your hands, feet, concentration, timing and a good deal of coordination all at once. Your mind can’t keep endlessly running in circles when you’re trying to get four different things to work together. Afterwards, my head feels clearer, my body more awake and my mood is usually noticeably better.
That’s probably also why drumming can feel so therapeutic: it demands your full attention, brings you back into your body, and literally helps you release something through rhythm and movement.
The Drummers series (you can find it here) grew out of my love for all of this, as well as inspiration from the 10th anniversary of Drum academy Jeroen Molenaar and the drum/percussion day organised to mark the occasion.
Collages about the different types behind a drum kit: familiar characters, a touch of exaggeration and, above all, plenty of humour. From the drummer who needs just one more cymbal, to the one who has to straighten the logo after every hit. From the minimalist player to the drummer who plays so far behind the beat that everyone thinks something’s gone wrong, even as the groove keeps getting better.
And which drummer am I? I'm afraid it's 'The Heavy Hitting One'.
