Françoise Vaal:

Art about landscape, connection

and memory

I’m Françoise Vaal, a photographic mixed media artist from the Netherlands. In my work, I explore the relationship between people and nature — not as a romantic idea, but as something we can experience physically and through our senses. My images come from a desire to learn to see again, in a time when many people live by schedules, screens and speed.

I work with photography, collage and paint. Sometimes I start with a landscape that overwhelms me with its scale, its silence or its indifferent beauty. Sometimes with something small: a plant, a texture, a shadow on stone. In both cases, I'm asking the same question: what does it feel like to be part of something bigger?

The landscape does not appear in my work as a backdrop, but as a presence. A force. An intelligence. I am fascinated by rugged places: terrain not made for comfort. There, where people become small, something else often emerges: respect, calm, memory.

My mixed media collages often have a layered quality. I build images the way you build an experience: not linearly, but in layers of perception. Paint and texture give the photography a physical skin.

For me, collage is a way to make an inner journey visible. Some works feel like a gateway or a threshold, as if you are briefly on the edge of another way of seeing.

My art isn't meant as an escape, but as a return. To the body. To the landscape. To the place where we instinctively know: this is real.

Alongside my independent art, I write essays and stories about sensory intelligence, connection with nature and the loss of attention in the modern world. These texts extend my visual language. Image and word come together in a single movement: an invitation to trust what you feel again, before you explain it.

I create work for people who are moved by nature, stillness and meaning. For collectors who don’t just want something to hang on the wall, but something to live with.

"My passion for nature comes from its raw beauty and mystery. Every landscape tells a story waiting to be revealed.

The vastness of the earth awakens in me a deep longing to travel, explore and connect with its primal power.

Within that encounter lies hope — the hope of a renewed sense

of belonging in the world."
