What’s Underneath is an original mixed media artwork on paper, featuring a monumental rocky hill in the distance, a small line of surf in the foreground, and a hidden network of texture beneath the landscape.

At first, the eye is drawn to the rock formation rising in the background. Solid, ancient and seemingly immovable, it dominates the horizon. In front of it, the sea breaks gently along the shore. But the real mystery begins lower down.

Beneath the visible landscape, layers of textured paint and gauze form an almost geological network. They suggest roots, veins, cracks, erosion, buried structures or something else entirely. The material invites you to look closer and ask the question behind the title:

What is underneath?

The work plays with the difference between what we see and what we imagine lies beneath the surface. Landscapes can appear calm and complete, while underneath them are layers of history, movement, pressure and change.

What’s Underneath is een origineel mixed media kunstwerk op papier, met op de achtergrond een monumentale rotsheuvel, op de voorgrond een smalle strook branding en daaronder een verborgen netwerk van textuur.

In eerste instantie wordt je blik naar de grote rotsformatie op de achtergrond getrokken. Massief, oud en ogenschijnlijk onbeweeglijk domineert hij de horizon. Daarvoor breekt de zee zacht langs de kust. Maar het echte mysterie begint lager in het beeld.

Onder het zichtbare landschap vormen lagen van structuurverf en gaas een bijna geologisch netwerk. Het kan doen denken aan wortels, aderen, scheuren, erosie, ondergrondse structuren of misschien iets heel anders. Het materiaal nodigt je uit om dichterbij te kijken en de vraag uit de titel te stellen:

Wat zit eronder?

Het werk speelt met het verschil tussen wat we zien en wat we vermoeden dat zich onder het oppervlak bevindt. Een landschap kan rustig en compleet lijken, terwijl daaronder lagen van geschiedenis, beweging, druk en verandering verborgen liggen.

Het gaas voegt een kwetsbare, bijna organische structuur toe aan de zwaardere texturen van de verf. Samen creëren ze diepte en maken ze het onderste deel van het werk net zo belangrijk als het landschap erboven.

Voor mij gaat What’s Underneath over nieuwsgierigheid. Over verder kijken dan het voor de hand liggende. Een rots is nooit alleen een rots, een kustlijn is nooit alleen wat je ziet en het oppervlak vertelt zelden het hele verhaal.

Met het intieme formaat van 20x30 cm nodigt het werk uit om van dichtbij te bekijken. Het is een klein kunstwerk dat steeds nieuwe details laat zien, vooral wanneer het licht over de textuur beweegt.
